The Wages of Dying is Love

Saint Francis and the Sow

BY GALWAY KINNELL
The bud
stands for all things,
even for those things that don’t flower,
for everything flowers, from within, of self-blessing;
though sometimes it is necessary
to reteach a thing its loveliness,
to put a hand on its brow
of the flower
and retell it in words and in touch
it is lovely
until it flowers again from within, of self-blessing;
as Saint Francis
put his hand on the creased forehead
of the sow, and told her in words and in touch
blessings of earth on the sow, and the sow
began remembering all down her thick length,
from the earthen snout all the way
through the fodder and slops to the spiritual curl of the tail,
from the hard spininess spiked out from the spine
down through the great broken heart
to the sheer blue milken dreaminess spurting and shuddering
from the fourteen teats into the fourteen mouths sucking and blowing beneath them:
the long, perfect loveliness of sow.

Like Magic

"When we speak of magic we should speak of those moments that were the purest when the stars were bright and when the laughter was loud - those are the most magical moments in life."

It starts with

The space between where you want to go and what you have often requires loss before regaining ground. —Greg Hartle

We have to let go of the old to begin the new. The important condition in this relationship is that the letting go has to happen first. To make space for new things in our lives, we often have to let go of the old thing first, wading through the murky middle of uncertainty before building something new. Newness is uncomfortable, uncertain, and scary. Everyone wants to start something new, but want to do it while holding on to the old.

Progres

"All human development, no matter what form it takes, must be outside the rules; otherwise we would never have anything new."

-Charles Kettering

Feel Awkward

"You shouldn’t try to stop everything from happening. Sometimes you’re supposed to feel awkward. Sometimes you’re supposed to be vulnerable in front of people. Sometimes it’s necessary because it’s all part of you getting to the next part of yourself, the next day."

Summer Manifesto

“Wander a whole summer if you can. The time will not be taken from the sum of life. Instead of shortening, it will indefinitely lengthen it and make you truly immortal.”

John Muir

Meet me at the bridge Gilbert

“someone can be madly in love with you and still not be ready. they can love you in a way you have never been loved and still not join you on the bridge. and whatever their reasons you must leave. because you never ever have to inspire anyone to meet you on the bridge. you never ever have to convince someone to do the work to be ready. there is more extraordinary love, more love that you have never seen, out here in this wide and wild universe. and there is the love that will be ready.”

Silence

"Silence is like fertile soil, which, as it were, awaits our creative act, our seed."
